Good luck to Beccles and Bungay Students taking part in The British Championships

10 August 2009

Beccles and Bungay Taekwondo Clubs will be sending students to compete at the GTUK British Individual Championships held at Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry on Saturday 8th March 2014.

For many this will be their first tournament, and a big step in developing their Taekwondo skills.

We wish them all the very best of luck.

Win or lose, always remember the tenets of Taekwondo:

Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit

Introducing Taekwondo to pupils at St Michael’s Primary School, Gillingham Nr Beccles

Today Monday 3rd March 2014, we are off to deliver Taekwondo in 2 x 1 hour fun sessions to pupils at the St Michael’s Primary School in Gillingham.

We will deliver a format that was very successful when doing fun sessions at Beccles Sports Hall last summer.

And we will be taking ‘BOB’ along for the children to try out their new skills at the end of the sessions.

Our session will be based around the following:

* Read out the Oath and Tenets of Taekwon-do
* 5/10 Fun Warm-up (while talking about Taekwon-do)
including star jumps and spotty dogs (jumping/punching lunges)
light stretching
* Show how to make a correct fist
sitting stance middle section punches with kiah (shouting)
* Show walking stance
line work going back and forth in walking stance
then front snap kicks
then front snap kicks and middle section punches (Kiahing)
* We demonstrate and talk about patterns that are used in our belt gradings
* Students to pair up by size ready for bag work
front snap kick
turning kick
combination of kicks and punches
* Tag sparring
This is where you pair up and touch each other on the back to score a point
We emphasise touch and not punch!!
This is to get students to move around in a natural way in preparation to real sparring
* We will show what a real spar would look like and talk about how our sport is semi contact not full contact.
* We will also demonstrate breaking techniques using plastic breaking boards
* Introduce BOB (Body Opponent Bag)
Allow students to punch and kick one at a time in a revolving circle
From experience children really love to have a go with BOB
* Warm down and give out leaflets and sticky badges to say they have done Taekwon-do

East Anglia Interclub Success

Fifteen students of all ages travelled to Wellingborough in Northamptonshire to compete in this year’s East Anglia Interclub tournament and came away with a superb haul of 18 medals, 3 trophies and a creditable 3rd place.  The students from Beccles and Bungay Taekwondo clubs had the furthest to travel and the longest day but fought against stiff opposition in order to reach the podium.

Gold medals were won by Lucy Thurbon (aged 12) and Amanda Burden (who also won a silver for patterns and the best adult female competitor award), Lucy also gained a bronze for her sparring after bravely fighting on with a split lip.  Adam Fuller (aged 11) won silver for patterns and bronze for sparring whilst his brother Lewis (aged 15) won silver for patterns.  Jacob Burden gained silver for patterns and bronze for sparring whilst his brother Ben narrowly missed out on a medal in a huge Peewee division.  Danny Hammond won silver for sparring, Karl Swanston won silver for patterns and bronze for sparring whilst also gaining the best adult male competitor award, unfortunately his son Jake finished 4th in both sparring and patterns after coming up against larger competitors and narrow decisions. Liam Howes  (aged 12) fought bravely to win a silver for sparring in his 1st ever competition.  Jason Drake achieved a superb silver for sparring in an all coloured belts adult category in which he was the lowest grade whilst also getting bronze for patterns.  Henry Howe (aged 15) was rewarded for his artistic patterns with a great silver medal, and battled hard to win a bronze for his sparring, this also earned him the award for best junior male competitor of the day.

In the black belt section Jenna Akerman (aged 17) won bronze for patterns and Saskia Baylis (also 17) got bronze for sparring in the tough adult female category which rounded off a very busy day.

Clinton Gillett the area international instructor said “all competitors from the region did themselves proud as just having the guts and determination to stand up in competition and fight opponents as well as nerves deserves respect and admiration, only 10% of club members nationally compete so just taking part is a credit to themselves”.

Students are now gearing up for the British Championships and the next grading but there is always room for new beginners so if you want to come along to either Bungay or Beccles club you will be made very welcome in our family friendly classes and you can find details on our websites or

Equipment & Dress code
All students are recommended to travel in casual clothes, please wear any club or GTUK merchandise if you have it. There are facilities there for all students to change into their Doboks when they arrive. Please don’t forget your belt! All boys are required to wear groin guards, and we suggest that any long hair is tied up and pulled back off the students face. If you have your own sparring gear please ensure you have it with you. We would politely ask any students that do have their own sparring gear, if they would mind sharing with any new starters that do not. Any jewellery should be removed, or covered with plasters if it really cannot be taken out; please be advised though any jewellery worn is completely at your own risk.

Format of the day
Students will register as a club, and will be taken through to the main hall, where they can rejoin their parents/guardians, we would recommend they then get changed and then use any spare time to warm up and practice. Grand Master Oldham and the senior grades will open the tournament at aprox. 9:30. There will be a holding area where all competitors will remain until their category is ready to commence. Students will be called and will bow to the judges. In the patterns category they will be asked which pattern they will be doing, and they will then perform that pattern against their opponent, judges will signal which competitor is successful at the end. This will continue through to the final. Similarly for sparring, students will be called up, and will bow in and then students will compete to see who achieves the most points during the time.
Medals will be presented during a number of ceremonies throughout the day.

Tag Team Event
The Black Belt tag team event will take place as a demonstration event. The event will consist of a 4 minute sparring point stop session where the team members can tag in and out of the bout, after a point has been scored or the sparring has been stopped for any other reason. Teams can register on the day at the registration desk at a cost of £15 per team.

Any parents wishing to take photographs or video need to sign a form when they arrive into the building, you will ordinarily be issued with a sticker to show this has been completed. There will also be a 3rd party professional photographer onsite, who will be taking photographs during the day. If students’ photos are taken you can purchase these to take away on the day.

We recommend that you take a pack up with you and some entertainment for young children. There is however a cafeteria which sells hot and cold drinks, crisps, bacon and sausage sandwiches for you during the day should you need it.

After Party
Everyone is welcome to come to the Heroes & Villains Theme After Champs Party at the Sports Connexion. Tickets are on sale at £5 per person on the day from the merchandise stand, or can be reserved via your Instructors before 19th October for £3 per ticket. The party starts at 7pm, and a buffet will be served at 8pm. The disco and bar will continue till late.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask your Instructors on the day. We would like to wish you all the very best of luck and hope you enjoy your day, and also take this opportunity to thank you for your support!
