British GTUK Taekwondo Championships 2018

Twenty four competitors from Beccles and Bungay Taekwondo Clubs made the 160 mile journey to Coventry at the weekend to compete in this year’s GTUK British Championships and came back with an astonishing 27 medals which illustrates the high standard of taekwondo in the East of England!

Beccles student success included a fantastic gold for Liam Mills in the junior black belt patterns and silver for sparring, whilst Jason Drake gained double silver in the adult veteran black belts.  Barbara Mazza claimed a silver for sparring in the ladies veteran black belt section and Paul Chapman achieved silver for sparring and bronze for patterns in the 7^th-1^st Kup males. Glen Thomson achieved a bronze for the 4^th-6^th kup male patterns but Tyler and Blake Goffin narrowly missed out on the medals in their respective junior and pee wee categories but they competed superbly.

Bungay student success included a fantastic patterns gold and silver sparring in the adult female 7^th-1^st kup for Jade Howgate, whilst Daisy Whymark gained gold for sparring and silver patterns in the junior girls 7^th-1^st kup division.  Gordon Perkis won a great gold in the adult male 10^th-3^rd kup sparring and his son Joshua won silver for patterns in the pee wee section.  Frankie Howells battled to a silver in patterns and bronze sparring at junior male 10^th-6^th kup whilst team mate Malichi Fabian gained double bronze for his junior age category.  Jayden Howgate also achieved double bronze in the black belt pee wee section.  Jed Baddour won a patterns silver in the older pee wee 7^th-1^st kups and Isaac Slater won a silver for sparring in the younger category.  Brothers Christian (junior black belt) and Liam Everett (adult 7^th-1^st kup lightweight) both won bronze medals in their respective divisions whilst Toyota Smith also picked up sparring bronze in the adult ladies 6^th-1^st kups.  Ewan Lutz achieved a bronze medal in the junior male 7^th-1^st kups but Lewis Flatt, Benjamin Burden, Colby and Bailey Aldrich all missed out on medals despite great determination and grit.

The clubs can now focus on getting ready for the next grading of the year and It is still possible to start training with Clinton Gillett at Bungay who is a 5^th Degree international instructor, world silver medallist from 2000 and current UITF veteran champion or for Beccles 2^nd & 3^rd Degree Sue and Nidge Bedingfield who have a whole host of national and regional titles. Details can be found on the club websites and welcomes students of all abilities from the age of 6 to 60 and beyond or pop along for a free taster lesson.

Well done to Mr Drake for representing Beccles Taekwondo at GTUK Scottish Championships held in Glasgow last weekend, Jason came back with a Silver Medal for Sparring, and Bronze for Patterns.

This was a 800 mile round trip, that’s True commitment to our sport!

Training sessions are really buzzing at Beccles Taekwondo!

Taekwondo classes started back after a short Easter break, with lots of new faces and some old ones returning too 🙂

Beccles Taekwondo Club is really buzzing at the moment, we have people of all ages training and learning this self-defense martial art.

SO come and give it a go, the more the merrier, you will get the feel of a traditional martial art being taught in large classes, the way it was meant to be!

At the same time getting individual assessment of your progress as you develop new skills with strength and discipline as you work your way though the colour belt syllabus up to black belt.

Next grading is 24th June, but we have the GTUK British Championships on May 12th, and ‘white belts’ can enter!

Our teaching style is friendly but firm 🙂

This is a great way to show off your Taekwon-do skills, meet new friends and prepare yourself for your Black Belt Grading. Awesome Medals!!

Beccles Taekwon-do Grading. A Big Congratulations to all Beccles & Bungay Taekwon-do Students who passed their Spring Grading at Bungay High School on Sunday 18th March 2018.

All students were graded on their individual belt syllabuses, which includes patterns, techniques, step sparring routines, self defence, sparring, destruction, and a test of their knowledge in both English and Korean.

GTUK Examiner Mr Steve King VI degree was very pleased with the progress of all students, and said that the standards were very high, he congratulated them on their 100% pass rate.

A special well done to Beccles’s Jack Chapman (Peewee) and Evelyn Brooks (Junior) for passing their Provisional Black Belt grading, they were awarded their Black Tag belts and will now be preparing for their full Black Belt grading in front of Grandmaster Oldham IX degree at a later date.

The spring is a great time to start this family orientated sport, giving new members time to learn their 1st belt syllabus in readiness for the June grading, it takes 3-4 years to learn the full syllabus and become a 1st Degree Black Belt student.
