The Eastern Area Taekwondo Inter-Club tournament took place in Wellingborough this year and Bungay Taekwondo Club with support from Beccles Taekwondo Club battled to a very creditable 3rd place in the region with some great individual performances which was excellent considering the competition was so fierce.
24 medals in total were achieved by 18 fighters in all age groups, pee wees (under 12) included silver for Jayden Howgate in his patterns division and silver for Jack Sutton in his sparring division.
Juniors (13-17) achieved a great haul of medals with Tegan Brown’s and Christian Everett’s golds for patterns and silvers for sparring being a real highlight, whilst Ewan Lutz gained gold for sparring and bronze for patterns, James Thurston won silver for patterns and bronze for sparring. Robin De-Berniere-Smart did really well to win silver for sparring and bronze for patterns in his first ever competition whilst Liam Everett won bronze for sparring.
Adults (18-48!) included a great double gold for Jade Howgate in sparring and patterns, gold for Barbara Mazza (Beccles) in the patterns and silver in the sparring and a superb gold for Club Assistant Instructor Martin Sloan in the black belt patterns. Jack Handley achieved a fantastic gold in the black belt sparring and bronze for patterns whilst Jason Drake (Beccles) gained silver for black belt patterns and bronze for sparring. Chloe Florido achieved silver for patterns and sparring in her division.
Several other competitors competed and supported superbly with Isaac Slater battling to 4th place in the pee wee sparring, whilst Findley Mutti, Lewis Flatt and Oliver Lamb all showed true taekwondo spirit but missed out on medals. Steve King The area 6th degree and senior said “Bungay did really well once again and their sense of team spirit and camaraderie is excellent, I am sure they will win the regions one day soon!”

Beccles Taekwon-do instructors, Susie and Nidge Bedingfield, are very proud to have a New Black Belt at the club in Jason Drake from Great Yarmouth.
Jason travelled the 150 miles to Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry to prepare for his big day the evening before. He had a gruelling day performing in front of senior instructors including Master Aucellio 7th Degree, and Grand Master Oldham 9th Degree who’s history links the Beccles club back to the originator of Taekwon-do General Choi Hong Hi in 1955.
The Black Belt grading consisted of: 3 pattern sequences of strikes, kicks and blocks; step sparring; sparring; the breaking 2 inches of pine boards with hand and feet techniques; Korean theory along with a thesis about Taekwon-do which all students prepare in the months beforehand. Jason showed superb Taekwon-do spirit throughout the day and got his reward with a coveted 1st Degree Black Belt.
Jason is a fully committed member of the Beccles club and has won many gold, silver and bronze medals from national competitions which he has attended over the last 4 years, and has barely missed a class in that time which shows great dedication and commitment. It usually takes up to 4 years to gain your Taekwon-do Black Belt, on your journey you achieve a great level of confidence, strength, fitness and can make lifetime friendships with like minded people along the way.
If you would like to be part of this brilliant martial art and start your Black Belt journey come over to The Venue in Beccles on a Monday or Thursday evening 7 – 8.30 pm, new students are always very welcome.
Well done to our 2 students who entered recently the
